Carla's piece is almost finished! just a few things to touch up here and there. so excited :)))) i'm going to move on the second painting for now but I will return to add the final touches. Just need a break to see it with new eyes :)
Beautiful job on the hair and the scrunchy, which so closely follow the style of the classical painting that was the inspiration. The face needs more modeling -- looks somewhat flat compared to the hair and drapery. The back-lighting on the shoulder is perfect, but in order for it to be more effective I think you need to deepen all the shadows, especially in the ear and around the eyes. Why are the eyes closed? Open the eye up a bit from the bottom. On your self-portrait a couple of years ago the closed eyes were an effective tool to portray your mood, but here it simply doesn’t look natural. The mouth looks a little stiff too. Although you didn’t post the photo from which you’re working, I’m sure you can find more shadows/dimples in the corner of her mouth. Also perhaps try a little more blending of the line defining the lower lip. I’m excited to see how it turns out, and also to see your next one modeled on Sargent’s Madam X.

ReplyDeletethank you! I knew the face could use a little more work. I'll finish up the second one and then get back to this soon :)
