blitz crit x(

Today's class was a crit about the work we had so far. We had four visiting artists who we individually met with while a classmate took notes.

my project is summed up really well in these few words:
reimagining your friends through the lens of some iconic portraiture"- p. kinha.

I learned a lot about what type of art people really like. I also learned that people are drawn to more loosely done or contemporary works. I hadn't developed any narrative for my works (not planning to have any) and I noticed that one critic wouldn't stop asking for this. I hate to say it but I left this critique with a cloud over my head.... I was hearing more of who I should paint like (artists whose work is extremely different from mine i.e. marlene dumas (below)), and what I should paint about.

update: Preeti

"Preeti" is coming along very well. I just need to few more finishing touches but I'm kind of exhausted now and it will have to wait for just a little while. In the mean time I will begin working on "Hana"

Preeti

The second piece I will working on is of my very good friend Preeti Kinha. I really tried to go for a madam X kind of look. I think she nailed it! I could totally see her walking down the red carpet!

Carlalalala

soo excited for this new set of work. My first subject is my super awesome friend Carla. she was such a beautiful model and it was really difficult to choose one picture to work on. We had a ton of fun working on this and I really want to do a good job on this :) I'm really going for that classical beauty look.

meeting with advisor

it was so great meeting with carrie! she is so awesome and she gave me some really good deadlines. this will really help me organize when i need to get things done :D

class critique

The class critique was really great. I got to see what people were doing and to hear some opinions of my work. I was really flattered because a lot of people liked my underpaintings (which I didn't think were that great at first lol) but it lets me know that I'm on the right track :)
As much as i admire the expressionist painting style I am really a die hard naturalistic painter. Maybe one day i will pull away from this obsession but as mark put it " you just have to get it out of your system."
Hopefully I can pull together a body of work that will do this :)
Mark suggested that I paint a ton of portraits. My only challenge now is to figure out how to make them interesting and how to put my mark on this art form that has been done numerous times.
So, with luck, i go forward!

angelo asti makes beautiful portraits. but doesn't this lady look a little like Sargents lady agnew??? omg
